AOL-TW Racks Up Another Open Source Coup: BSDi 12

Alert (or at least awake) reader deran9ed points out this article covering AOL Time-Warner's acquisition of BSDi. Sounds like AOL has been busy with acquisitions lately; best of luck any software engineers displaced by the move. Hopefully we'll see an integration of OpenSSH and AIM as well.

AOL-TW Racks Up Another Open Source Coup

  • the dalnet one was slightly humourous, but this just isn't funny. the last bastion of quality operating systemness around, bought by AOL? not only is it rather impossible but it's just not funny. bleh.

now if you guys had gone in with Tom Pabst and falsified some Microsoft/AOL secret merger plans, that would have cracked my ass.

Like 209-209-49-202.oakinreach.inreach.net is a reliable news source. It's tired, it's no longer funny, and I can't take anymore.

    IHBT. IHL. HAND.

  • The link posted for the "story" is actually a "dotless" IP address, which can potentially exploit security holes in many older browsers.

Aside from that, it would be really nice if some kind of corroboration were obtained before posting stuff like this.
  • When AOL-Time Warner-BSDi merges with Disney-Apple-Microsoft?

    Will FreeBSD survive?
  • Think of it this way.. With the BSD license, anyone and (and Would) take the FreeBSD project and start another one using the 5.0 Current as its baseline.
  • Does anyone else remember that one ?
  • Hahah, and I used to troll saying ftp.aol.com/pub/bsd should exist. Heh, guess it's now a definite possibility.

OTOH, this is a good thing for BSD. They now have something Linux doesn't--100% backed by a Fortune 100 company. Even tho Linux has Sun and IBM, each company will still continue to push Solaris and AIX, respectively. I am excited by the possibilities of what this could do for BSD.

  • Coca-Cola? Nonsense. They are planning the acquisition of VA Linux (which includes Slashdot) instead.

Slashdot.org will no longer be viewable from "http://slashdot.org/" you will now have to use "AOL Keyword: Slashdot" instead. Maybe I should keep my mouth shut, wouldn't that be awful if we all had to sign up with AOL just to view Slashdot?
  • exactly... was there *ANY* form of verification before it was posted? JFC, did Tim even READ the article?
  • As AOL-TW and /. know well, one's happiness is a function of one's expectations. :-|

  • I would like to point out that this is an april fools joke. The proof for this is look at the date and time that the story was posted, April 1st. Also, I have spoken to Time Warner about this for my own interest and was told that there is no such plan whatsoever. I just wanted you guys to be aware. Thanks. -- Jonathan M. • What are we going to do tommorow, Steve? What we do every day! Take over the web! *diabolic laugh* Seriously, what's next? buying the Coca-Cola maybe?

What good is a ticket to the good life, if you can't find the entrance?
